Tribute to P/O Derek Tapson by Ivan Berryman. (P) On a low-level mission over the Rhine on 10th February 1945, P/O Derek Tapson's Hawker Typhoon, PD447 (OV-F) was struck in the engine by a nearby flak burst. In attempting to bail out, Tapson hit his head on the windscreen surround and lost conciousness, recovering just in time to pull the ripcord on his parachute and land safely among the German AA battery that had shot him down. |
De Havilland Vampire T.11 by Ivan Berryman. (P) One of the final versions of the ubiquitous De Havilland Vampire to be built was the T.11, a two-seat trainer, one example of which was XE998, shown here in the colours of No.8 Flying School at RAF Swinderby in the early 1960s. This aircraft is now preserved and on display in the Solent Sky Museum, although currently in the livery of the Swiss Air Force. |
Richard Bong by Ivan Berryman. (P) The highest scoring US pilot of the Second World War, Richard Bong, is depicted in his personal P.38J Marge, claiming just one of his 40 confirmed victories. Insisting that he was not the greatest of marksmen, it was Bongs habit to manoeuvre to impossibly close distances before opening fire on his opponents. His eventual total may well have been greater than 40, as a further 8 probables could be attributed to him, together with 7 damaged. He was killed whilst testing a P.80 jet for the USAF in August 1945. |
Pup Northern Ireland by John Wynne Hopkins (P) A Royal Air Force Wessex HC2 Helicopter picks up troops somewhere in Northern Ireland. |
The Battle for the Skies Over Dieppe, 19th August 1942 by Graeme Lothian (P) A large umbrella of Spitfire Wings covered most of the sky over Dieppe during the Allied attack Operation Jubilee on 19th August 1942. Squadron leader Johnnie Johnson leads 610 (County of Chester) Squadron down from top cover support to lend a hand to Spitfires of 485 Squadron (New Zealand) and 411 Squadron (Canadian) which made up the 12 Group Wing, led by W/C Pat Jameson. The enemy being made up of a huge mixed force of Fw190 and Me109 fighters from JG2 and JG26. 12 Group Wing flew four times that disastrous day and in the end the Royal Air Force lost 106 aircraft compared to the Luftwaffe losses of 48. |
Tribute to Leutnant Cvitan Galic by Ivan Berryman. (P) With 38 confirmed and a further 5 unconfirmed aerial victories, Cvitan Galic was the second-highest scoring Croatian pilot, depicted here flying Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2, Yellow 6 during May 1943. Highly decorated for his exploits, Galic rose to become CO of 20.ZJ in March 1944, but was killed just one month later when his airfield was strafed by Spitfires of the South African Air Force. |
Tribute to Hughie Edwards by Ivan Berryman. (P) On 4th July, 1941, Wing Commander Hughie Idwal Edwards, flying Blenheim Mk. IV, V6028 (GB-D) led a vital attack on the port of Bremen, Germany. With no cloud cover to conceal their approach, the Blenheims of 105 and 107 Sqn flew 50 miles overland at a perilously low altitude, eventually reaching their target amid formidable anti-aircraft fire. All of the aircraft received some damage and four of the Blenheims were lost, but the mission was a major success, the remaining eleven aircraft returning safely to RAF Swanton Morely. Edwards was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and leadership |
The Dash for the Beach by Ivan Berryman. (P) Two Republic P.47s of the 78th FG roar low over the Normandy beaches as the Allied invasion gets underway during Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 as an LCT(5) Tank Landing Craft makes its break for the beach through a hail of enemy fire. These craft were used at all the D-Day beaches, carrying mixed loads of vehicles and stores in almost impossible conditions. |
Tribute to Clyde East by Ivan Berryman. (P) Clyde East joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and by 1942 was flying P-51 Mustangs with No.414 Sqn RCAF in England. He then transferred to the US Air Force, joining the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. He is shown here in P.51D Mustang 44-14306 5M-K, 'Lil Margaret', April 1945. In more than 200 missions he scored 13 victories, later serving in Korea flying RF-80 Shooting Stars and retiring in 1965. He died in 2014. |
Desert Gazelle by David Pentland. (P) Gazelle of Army Air Corps 661 Squadron on a reconnaissance mission for British 7th Armoured Division during Operation Desert Storm. |
Tribute to Giovanni Ancillotto by Ivan Berryman. (P) Italian Ace Giovanni Ancillotto scored a total of eleven victories during the Great War. This total includes two pioneering night-fighter victories in the summer of 1918. He is best known for his third balloon-busting victory in late 1917, however, during which his Nieuport 11 was severely damaged as he pressed home his attack with rockets, collecting much of the burning balloon with his aircraft. He is shown here during a previous balloon-busting victory with the empty launch tubes of 8 Le Prieur rockets testament to the fate of the enemy balloon. Giovanni Ancillotto was highly decorated and survived the war, but was killed in a car accident in 1924. |

North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. (P) Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. |
Tribute to Sqn Ldr David Fairbanks by Ivan Berryman. (P) Whilst flying with other Hawker Tempests of 274 Sqn on 11th February 1945, Sqn Ldr David Fairbanks spotted a lone Arado Ar234 of the Kommando Sperling 1 (F) / 123 flown by Hauptmann Hans Felde returning to its base at Rheine. A desperate chase commenced through the cloudbase until the German jet prepared to land, whereupon Fairbanks sent 4U+DH down in flames after a single short burst of his four 20mm cannon. |

Hurricane Patrol by Graeme Lothian (P) After taking part in the Battle of France early in 1940, 85 Squadron moved to Croydon on the 19th August, where, led by renowned squadron leader Peter Townsend DSO DFC, the squadron played a notable part in the Battle of Britain. Thirty Hurricane squadrons participated in the Battle of Britain compared to only eighteen Spitfire squadrons, claiming 80 percent of the RAF victories. Sir Sidney Camms innovative design ensured the Hurricane became a classic fighter. Hurricane Patrol portrays Squadron Leader Peter Townsend leading 85 Squadron on a high altitude sortie during the long hot summer of 1940. |
Tribute to Pappy Boyington by Ivan Berryman. (P) Pappy Boyington bringing his Vought F4U-1A Bu No 17883 of VMF-214 in to land at Turtle Bay Airfield, Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides Islands, in December 1943. Although often depicted in another aircraft, Boyington flew 883 more than any other of his Corsairs. |
Tribute to Sottotenente Giuseppe Biron by Ivan Berryman. (P) Giuseppe Biron was one of Italy's most successful pilots serving on the Eastern Front in 1941, claiming at least four kills against Russian aircraft, as depicted here, as he sends a Mig 3 down in flames whilst flying a Macchi MC.200 with 369a Squadriglia, 22° Gruppo Autonomo. Biron's aircraft sports the scarecrow smoking red stars emblem, designed by Biron himself and adopted as 22° Gruppo's badge before their deployment to the USSR. |
Capitaine Rene Fonck by Ivan Berryman. (P) The highest scoring allied ace of World War 1, Rene Fonck was born on 27th March 1894 and spent his early military service with the 11th Regiment of Engineers before being sent for flying instruction in the spring of 1915. Almost as soon as he had been assigned to combat duties, he began to score and was posted to Groupe de Combat No12, the famous Storks where a combination of superb airmanship and deadly accurate gunnery ensured that his victory tally continued to grow. By the end of the war, Fonck was credited with a commendable 75 confirmed victories, but it is likely that he may have been responsible for a further possible 69 kills, which would have taken his total score to 144 - 64 more than Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious Red Baron. Black Lizzie by Ivan Berryman. (P) Entering service with the RAF in June 1938, the Westland Lysander was to prove invaluable in its role of transporting SOE agents on clandestine missions during World War II. 1,652 Lysanders were built and they were the first British aircraft to be based in France at the outbreak of the war and the last to see action there during the evacuation of Dunkirk. The example shown is of 161 Sqn based at Tempsford. |
