Iain Wyllie

Having been trained in Naval Architecture and having a strong interest in saling ships, Iain's first subjects were the famous clipper ships and beautiful seascapes. His first efforts at aircraft painting were produced for painting competitions when he was a member of the Royal Observer Corps. Amongst his collection he still has a painting of a Gloster Javelin which won him the first of many competitions back in the 1960's. During the 1970's Iain perfected the art of airbrush painting and as a result became more and more recognised as on of the UK's finest artists, which finally led Iain into becoming a full time aviation airbrush artist producing over 80 cover paintings for the famous Osprey series of aviation books, as well as many private commissions.

Lightnings by Iain Wyllie.

The Lightning is powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines in a unique staggered stacked installation in the fuselage. The Lightning was developed to intercept increasingly capable bomber aircraft (Tupolev Tu-16, Tupolev Tu-22, Tupolev Tu-95), and thus has exceptional rate of climb, ceiling, and speed; pilots have described flying it as 'being saddled to a skyrocket'. This performance made the Lightning a 'fuel critical' aircraft meaning that its missions are dictated to a high degree by its limited range. Later developments provided greater range and speed along with aerial reconnaissance and ground-attack capability.

On the 10th of June 1941 en route to Emden, Stirling MG-D of No.7 Sqn was intercepted by two Me-109s. The aircraft piloted by Flying Officer G B Blacklock DFM returned safely to base after shooting down one of the fighters.

Early Morning by Iain Wyllie.

Hajo Hermann's faithful Ju-88 4D + AR south of Mount Etna in the spring of 1941. The Ju88 was originally constructed as a high-speed bomber. The prototype had its maiden flight in 1936 and the aircraft was operational in 1939. During World War II ten different variants were made, for example: bomber, night fighter, reconnaissance plane, dive bomber, torpedo bomber and close support aircraft for the Army. More than 15,000 Ju 88s were built.

Moskito-Jager by Iain Wyllie.

An Me262B-1a of 10/NJG.11 Kommando Welter climbs to operational altitude to begin an anti-Mosquito patrol in March 1945. The Royal Navy's best test pilot, Captain Eric Brown, chief naval test pilot and commanding officer of the Captured Enemy Aircraft Flight Royal Aircraft Establishment, who tested the Me 262 noted: This was a Blitzkrieg aircraft. You whack in at your bomber. It was never meant to be a dogfighter, it was meant to be a destroyer of bombers... The great problem with it was it did not have dive brakes. For example, if you want to fight and destroy a B-17, you come in on a dive. The 30mm cannon were not so accurate beyond 600 metres. So you normally came in at 600 yards and would open fire on your B-17. And your closing speed was still high and since you had to break away at 200 meters to avoid a collision, you only had two seconds firing time. Now, in two seconds, you can't sight. You can fire randomly and hope for the best. If you want to sight and fire, you need to double that time to four seconds. And with dive brakes, you could have done that.

King of the Strafers by Iain Wyllie.

Lt. Col. James A (Goody) Goodsons Mustang.. Goodson's first victory, an Fw-190, on 23rd June 1943, was followed by many more. He became proficient in shooting down Luftwaffe planes, and soon 15 had found they could not outfight him. In the meantime, he became known as the King of the Strafers, wrapping up 15 enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground for a total of 30 destroyed. The end of his combat with the 4th Fighter Group was not the least unusual. Now a Major and CO of the 336th Squadron, he strafed Neu Brandenburg airfield in Germany. A 20mm found its mark and he was badly wounded in his legs, but managed to crash-land and hobble off to a nearby wood. He kept on the run for a week before being captured. He was questioned by the Gestapo and summarily thrown into solitary to be shot the next morning. Jim, who spoke German well, cleverly convinced the SS that he was too valuable to the Reich alive and was transferred to the Luftwaffe's jurisdiction. He was welcomed and duly interrogated by Hanns Scharf, the Luftwaffe's master interrogator. He was assigned to Stalag Luft III, and was greeted by many of his friends who had preceded him.
