Ferdinand West VC
Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916, and in 1918 was with No.8 Sqn flying the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 when he was awarded his Victoria Cross. He discovered the location of the German ground reserves and crucially got the information back to the Army, despite suffering a severe leg wound from enemy fighters. He remained in the RAF until the end of World War Two. He died in 1988. Art Print #1 Art Print #2 |
Joseph Frantz
A French airman who became known alongside his gunner Louis Quénault after they shot down a German aircraft, becoming the first to claim an aerial victory by gunfire. Art Print |
William Dickson
An aircraft pilot aboard HMS Furious, he was decorated for his part in a raid on Zeppelin hangars in Denmark, the first raid in history launched from an aircraft carrier. Art Print |
James Struthers
With a crew of four, he flew the Coastal class airship C-9 from RNAS Mullion in Cornwall from 1916. With the U-boat threat in danger of crippling Britain, airships were employed to patrol the coasts, and C-9 was the most effective, Struthers and his crew claiming seven of them sunk. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and two Bars, and the submarine threat was greatly diminished. Art Print |
Willy Coppens
A Belgian Ace who shot down ten enemy aircraft but specialised in balloon-busting, claiming 27 observations balloons in less than a year of flying. Art Print |
Bert Evenden
Not strictly a WW1 signature, but closely related. Bert Evenden was a member of the crew of the airship R.34, the first to make an east-west crossing of the Atlantic by air. Art Print |
