Clipped Signature - James Kyle. Joined the RAF in 1941 and became a Typhoon pilot, completing a tour with No.197 Sqn. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and was demobilised in 1947, rejoining as an instructor in 1951 until his retirement in 1974. |
Clipped Signature - Derek Lovell. Joining in 1941, he became an instructor on several aircraft types before joining No.197 Sqn flying Typhoons on operations in support of D-Day and the Normandy campaign. He flew a total of 135 sorties by the end of the war, then spent a year instructing on Typhoons and Tempests. |
Clipped Signature - George Wood. George Wood survived being shot down in a Whirlwind of No.263 Sqn in 1943, returning to the UK to fly Typhoons with No.197 Sqn for the rest of the war. Clipped alongside the signatures of Tony Hallett and Ronnie Sheward - Tony Hallett completed more than 100 sorties in ground-attack Typhoons with No.198 Sqn and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Ronnie Sheward was an Argentine pilot who studied in England, and returned to the UK to join the RAF on the outbreak of war. Flying Spitfires and Hurricanes with 137, 264 and 266 Sqns, he took part in the first ever attack by rocket armed Hurricanes. |
