Tribute to George Kemp 'Sheep' Gilroy by Ivan Berryman. George Gilroy was a highly decorated World War Two pilot who acquired the nickname Sheep from his pre-war work as a shepherd. Flying with No.603 Sqn, he shared in 8 aircraft destroyed and claimed 3 victories of his own with the squadron. With No.609 Sqn he claimed another 4 victories before moving to command 324 Wing. Here, his score continued to climb and he was finally credited with 14 victories and another 14 shared with another dozen or so claimed damaged or probably destroyed. He is seen here in his No.603 Sqn Spitfire XT-N X4271 in which he claimed Me109s on the 28th and 31st August 1940. This Spitfire crashed in Wanstead after he baled out on 31st August - he was hospitalised by a crowd who mistook him for a German pilot in this incident. |
Straggler's End by Ivan Berryman. Byron Duckenfield is recorded as having shot down a Stuka near Dover, but the exact circumstances are not clear. 501 Sqn did encounter Stukas in this area on a number of occasions - depicted here is a 501 Sqn Hurricane on the tail of a Ju.87. |

Spitfire F Mk21 by Ivan Berryman. Pushing the concept of the Spitfire almost to the limit, the sleek F Mk212 represented the ultimate in fighter design at the end of the Second World War. Powered by the mighty Griffon 61 engine driving a five blade propeller, its armament consisted of four 20mm British Hispano Cannon, two in each wing. This example is LA200 (DL-E) of 91 Sqn in 1945. |
Harrier GR.9 by Ivan Berryman. Essentially an upgrade of the proven Harrier GR.7 as part of a £500m programme, the GR.9's final combat theatre was in the Ground Attack role in Afghanistan, as shown here, releasing a pair of AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles. |
3 Squadron Hurricanes by Ivan Berryman. Hurricanes of No.3 Squadron on patrol. MkIIc variants, characterised by the four Hispano or Oerlikon cannon housed in the wings. No 3 Sqn were engaged in night fighter activities during the Spring of 1941. |
The One That Broke The Dam by Ivan Berryman. Amid a hail of defensive fire, Flt Lt D J H Maltby holds Lancaster ED906/G AJ-J steady for his bomb aimer John Fort to perfectly choose his moment to release the Upkeep Bomb that would ultimately breach and destroy the Mohne Dam during the famous Dambuster raids on the Ruhr on the night of 16th / 17th May 1943. |

Tribute to Pilot Officer Pegge of No.610 Squadron by Ivan Berryman. Spitfire P9433 DW-E of No.610 flown by P/O Pegge, in which he shot down two Bf.109Es on 12th August 1940. |
Captain William Billy Bishop by Ivan Berryman. Undoubtedly one of the truly great Aces of the First World War, William Billy Bishop became celebrated for his technique of actively seeking out the enemy and bringing the fight to him, rather than the more usual practice of patrolling in search of enemy activity. An example of this was his single-handed attack on a German airfield in June 1917 when he destroyed not only a number of aircraft on the ground, but then successfully despatched another seven Albatross scouts that took off to engage him. For this action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross in August 1917 and his final tally when the war ended was 72 confirmed victories. He is depicted here in his Nieuport Scout B1566 in combat with a Pfalz D.III. |
SR45 Princess Over Cowes by Ivan Berryman. The mighty ten-engine Princess flying boat was one of the most advanced aircraft of its day in terms of pressurized hull and assisted flying controls and yet it was, at the same time, something of an anachronism as the age of flying boats had come to an end and the exciting new jet era had arrived. The only SR.45 ever to fly is depicted over the Cowes works where she was built in 1952. |
Tribute to Peter Wykeham-Barnes by Ivan Berryman. Lattely known as Air Marshal Sir Peter Guy Wykeham, KCB, DSO and Bar, OBE, DFC and Bar, AFC - he is shown here baling out of his stricken Gloster Gladiator of No.80 Sqn over North Africa on 4th August 1940. At the time he would have been known as Peter Wykeham-Barnes - a flying Ace who would go on to score 14 victories plus 3 shared in a wartime career which also saw him fly with No.274 Sqn and command No.73 Sqn, No.257 Sqn and No.23 Sqn. Remaining with the Royal Air Force after the war, he became a test pilot and served with the US Air Force in the Korean War before taking serveral roles in the RAF, culminating in Deputy Chief of Air Staff from 1967 until retirement in 1969. He died in 1995. |
North Atlantic Companions by Ivan Berryman. Short Sunderland Mk.1 L5798 (DA-A) of 210 Sqn, based at Pembroke, dips her wings in salute to HMS Hood as she punches through the North Atlantic swell early in 1941. By May of that year, this mighty ship would be gone, lost with all but three of her crew, a victim of the might of the German Navy at the savage hands of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. |

Tribute to Wing Commander Adrian Warburton by Ivan Berryman. One of the most unorthodox and daring pilots of World War II, 'Warby' Warburton was the only bomber pilot to become an ace, shooting down a Savoia Marchetti SM.79, a Macchi MC.200 and three Cant Z.506Bs, one of which is depicted here being attacked by Warburton's Martin Maryland AR705. |
D-Day Invasion : Tribute to the Glider Troops by Ivan Berryman. A tribute to the glider crews and airborne troops who participated in the glider operations during D-Day. The British Horsa glider (known as the flying coffin) was used by British, Canadian and American airborne forces during the invasion. Approximately 100 glider pilots were killed or wounded during the D-Day operations. |
Tribute to the Lockheed C-130 Hercules by Ivan Berryman. Entering service as far back as 1956, the C-130 Hercules is the longest continuously produced military aircraft and has served with many countries throughout the world. This versatile aircraft has been a military transport, firefighting aircraft, missile platform and humanitarian supply aircraft in a multitude of roles. Among its notable achievements is a record set in 1963 for the largest and heaviest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. |
Hard Hitter by Ivan Berryman. Whilst in command of 609 Sqn in January 1944, F/Lt (later Wing Commander) J R Baldwin, leading a small formation of Hawker Typhoon 1Bs, encountered thirty Focke-Wulf Fw190s and engaged them in a furious battle. Nine enemy aircraft were shot down in the action, Baldwin accounting for two of them himself. He went on to finish the war as the highest-scoring Typhoon pilot of all with 15 confirmed victories, one shared, one probable and four damaged. He is depicted here, flying DN360 with the codes PR-A. |
Bug Killer by Ivan Berryman. Equipped with the experimental Monica IIIE detection device, Hawker Tempest EJ535 was deployed to the Fighter Interception Unit at Newchurch for evaluation in July 1944. Originally developed as the AN/APS 13, Monica had been intended as a rear-looking device to warn crews of attacks from behind. Now modified to face forward, it became a valuable aid in the battle against Hitler's terror weapons, notably the V-1 Flying Bomb. In the hands of the Fighter Interception Unit's then Commanding Officer Joseph Berry, this became a winning combination with no fewer than 52 Doodlebugs falling to Berry's guns - on one occasion, seven V1s being shot down by Berry in a single night. |
