West Lancashire (Auxiliary)

Beware, beware

Formed 10th February 1936, at RAF Hendon. Initially flew Hawker Hart aircraft then Hawker Hinds, before converting to a number of variants of Spitfires throughout the war. During the war, they were present at Dunkirk and fought in the Battle of Britain. The squadron converted to Mustangs in March 1945, but disbanded in August 1945. The squadron reformed in May 1946, again with Spitfires, beforing converting to Meteor jets in May 1951. The squadron finally disbanded on 10th March 1957.

Lone Patrol by Ivan Berryman (PC)

No 611 Squadron was one of the earliest to receive the Spitfire Mk IX, the first aircraft in the RAFs inventory that could take on Germanys mighty Focke-Wulf 190 on equal terms. OC of 611 Sqn in February 1942 was Sqn Ldr Hugo Armstrong, shown here flying BS435, FY-F.


Spitfires of No.611 West Lancashire Squadron by Ivan Berryman.

Spitfire Mk.IXs of No.611 Sqn including aircraft FY-F belonging to the Commanding Officer of 611 Squadron, Sqn Ldr Hugo Armstrong, on patrol late in 1942. Armstrong scored a victory in this aircraft on 2nd November 1942, bringing down an Fw190 for his only victory with this squadron. With a total of nine victories, he was awarded the DFC in May 1942, and the Bar to the DFC in January 1943, before being shot down and killed over the English Channel in February 1943.

A pair of Spitfire Mk.IXEs of 611 Squadron make their way home from a patrol during the summer of 1942. At this time 611 Squadron were based at Kenley and were the first squadron to receive the new Mk.IX putting it on equal terms, for the first time, with the formidable Focke-Wulf 190.

A trio of Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXs from 611 Squadron. EN555 FY-X joined the squadron on 9th March 1943, BS387 FY-Y was sent to join 611 squadron in February 1943 and EN133 FY-B went to 611 squadron on 16th November 1942. EN133 was engaged by Fw190s of JG26 on 14th March 1943 and was shot down. The pilot, Squadron Leader J H Slater AFC, was killed.
