Warrant Officer Tadeusz Jan Frankowski

Flight Lieutenant T Franks as he was known in the Royal Air Force was a Polish airman who flew with the RAF during World War Two. He served in No.305 Sqn and flew in Wellington bombers. On the night of 27th August 1942, his Wellngton Z1245 SD-M was shot down near Eindhoven. While three of the crew died in the crash, he was injured and alongside his commander Antoni Kiewnarski was captured by the Germans. He managed to escape from hospital and make his way back to Britain. Kiewnarski became better known when he was one of the 76 men to take part in what is known as The Great Escape - he was recaptured hours later and was one of the 50 executed by the Gestapo. Tadeusz Frankowksi stayed in the UK and became an airline pilot from 1954 to 1980. He died in Blackpool on 13th February 1996 at the age of 75.
