Squadron Leader Irving Kennedy DFC MD

One of Canada's highest scoring Aces of World War Two, he is credited with 10 victories plus 5 shared and 1 probable. He joined the war in September 1941 flying the Whirlwind fighter with No.263 Sqn, then transferred to No.421 Sqn RCAF flying Spitfires. Most of his victories came while he served in Malta with No.249 Sqn between October 1942 and June 1943. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and moved to more squadrons : No.185 Sqn, No.93 Sqn and No.111 Sqn. In the summer of 1944 he became Commanding Officer of No.401 Sqn RCAF. He was shot down and baled out over enemy territory, escaping capture thanks to a French family. After the war he became a doctor. He died on 6th January 2011.
