John Vivian Stanbury | John Vivian Stanbury Project Engineer and Chief Project Engineer, Hawker Aircraft 1940 - 1956. His father, John D Stanbury, was Chief Draughtsman with the Martinsyde aircraft company at Brooklands and later with the George Handasyde company at Woking until its demise in 1926. Sydney Camm (later Sir Sydney) was in the drawing offices of the two companies at the same time. Vivian Stanbury was only a small boy when he first knew Mr Camm, who gave him two model aircraft. This and visits to Brooklands with its wonderful flying displays and motor-racing, generated an early interest in aircraft and cars. He attended Cranleigh School from 1926 until 1931. In 1931 he joined HG Hawker Engineering Company at Kingston on 8th April where Sydney Camm was now Chief Designer. First drawing, dated June 1931, of Tomtit with AR9 engine. In Design Office from start, but spent a lot of time and gained much knowledge and experience in the workshops at a time when the biplane Harts, Furies and variants were in production with worldwide sale. From 1933 to 1937 he was involved in project design of the monoplane developments, the first, adventurous Monoplane Fury, the Hurricane with its PV12, later Merlin, engine, and then, more closely, in the Henley, Typhoon, Fury the latter employing low drag power plant designs were patented. In 1940 the Project Office was creeated, with Robert Lickley the Chief Engineer. Vivian Stanbury started Project No.s starting at 1001. 1943 saw him investigating the application of the jet engine to single seat fighters. In 1944 he completed Project Drawing of P1040/1, 23rd December, signed by J V Stanbury and countersigned by R L Lickley. He also gained a patent fot he bifurctaed jet-pipe. Subsequent developments with swept wings were bult as P1052 and then P1081 with straight-through jet pipe leading to the eventual design of the Hunter and subsequent 2-seater and supersonic developments. P1040 with the addition of an Armstrong-Siddeley rocket motor became P1072. In 1946 he became the Chief Project Engineer, initially joined with Alan Lipfriend. In 1947 the P1067 single seat single engine interceptor fighter with Rolls Royce AJ65 (Avon) axial jet around which Spec F3/48 was issued. This became the Hunter and invarious versions was sold worldwide. In 1951 the P1101 two-seater version of the Hunter was designed. P1083 Supersonic proposal with greater wing sweep and thinner wing section. In 1954 he designed P1096 supersonic research aircraft to Spec ER314T and P1103 supersonic all-weather fighter to Spec F135T, and P1108 carrier-borne attack aircraft to Spec M148T, none of which were built. In 1956 he joined Rolls-Royce Motor Car Division as Chief Designer. |
