Flight Commnander James G Struthers DSC** | Flight Commnander James G Struthers DSC** Born in 1885, he is best known for his exploits as an airship commander in World War One. With a crew of four, he flew the Coastal class airship C-9 from RNAS Mullion in Cornwall from 1916. With the U-boat threat in danger of crippling Britain, airships were employed to patrol the coasts, and C-9 was the most effective, Struthers and his crew claiming seven of them sunk. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and two Bars, and the submarine threat was greatly diminished. He served in World War Two with the Royal Observer Corps, based in his native West of Scotland. He died in 1979 aged 93.
