Out Of The Sun - LFG Roland C.II by Ivan Berryman. (PC) One of the few rules of aerial combat that were established in the First World War was to attack, where possible, with the sun behind you, thus using the element of surprise both to appear as if from nowhere and to blind your opponent to minimise retaliation. Just such a tactic has been successfully employed here as a DH.2 rakes the tail of Staffelfuhrer Hauptmann Rudolf Kleines Kasta 3 LFG Roland C.II as it returns from a patrol in the skies above northern France in 1916. Known affectionately as The Whale, the C.II was extensively streamlined and the positioning of the cockpits and wing cut-outs afforded both the pilot and observer unequalled views in all directions. Power was supplied by a 160hp Mercedes D.III engine and armament was a 7.92mm Spandau in front of the pilot and a 7.92mm Parabellum for the observer. |
The Dash for the Beach by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Two Republic P.47s of the 78th FG roar low over the Normandy beaches as the Allied invasion gets underway during Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 as an LCT(5) Tank Landing Craft makes its break for the beach through a hail of enemy fire. These craft were used at all the D-Day beaches, carrying mixed loads of vehicles and stores in almost impossible conditions. |
Pure Dynamite by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Crucial to the early stages of Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944, the B-26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron, carried out low level bombing runs on the German defenses to pave the way for the Allied landings along the beaches of northern France and thereafter provided vital air support as the invasion gathered momentum. 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum, is depicted here as a tribute to the brave crews of the 386th. |
Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman. (PC) 19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1987. |
Gothas Moon by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Just as the name Zeppelin had become the common term for almost every German airship that ventured over Britain, so the name Gotha became generically used for the enemy bombers that droned across the English Channel during 1917-1918, inflicting considerable damage to coastal ports and the capital. As the massed raids of Bombengeschwader 3 increased, a public inquiry in England brought about the formation of the Royal Air Force as an independent service to counter this new threat and fighters from Europe were brought home to defend against these marauding giants. As a result, heavy losses on the German side meant that daylight raids had to be abandoned and all operations were henceforth conducted by night. Here, a pair of Gotha G.Vs begin to turn for home as searchlights play fruitlessly over distant fires, the grim result of another successful nights work. |
Home in Time for Tea by Ivan Berryman. (PC) An Avro Lancaster heads west as the sun begins to set, a daylight mission complete as it returns to its home airfield. |
Battle Above the Alps by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Josef Kiss is depicted attacking a flight of Caproni Ca.III bombers above the Alps in a Hansa-Brandenburg C.1 of Flik 24 in 1916. He and his observer, Georg Kenzian successfully forced down two of these aircraft and returned to base safely, his own aircraft riddled with over 70 holes sustained during the combat. The Austro-Hungarian ace was to end the war with a total of 19 confirmed victories. |
Looking for Business, March 1918 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Arguably the best known of all World War 1 fighter aces, Mannfred von Richthofen, the 'Red Baron', is depicted here flying Fokker Dr.1, serial No 425/17, in its final livery following the introduction of the Balkenkreuze, early in 1918. Contrary to popular belief, this was the only Triplane flown by the Rittmeister that was painted all red and was also the aircraft in which he lost his life on 21st April 1918, the celebrated ace having scored a confirmed 80 victories against allied aircraft over France. His brother, Lothar von Richthofen, also flew with Jasta 11 and his aircraft can be seen close by with the all-yellow rear fuselage. Pilots of von Richthofen's 'Flying Circus' were permitted to paint their aircraft in their own personal colours, provided that they retained the red cowl, struts and wheel covers that denoted Jasta 11. |
Eastern Front Marauder by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Much maligned by its pilots for its cramped cockpit and difficult handling qualities, Henschel's Hs.129 was to prove a useful and potent weapon in the Ground Attack role, especially on the Eastern Front where the Russian Sturmoviks had ably demonstrated the importance of a purpose-built aircraft to fulfil this vital capability. This Hs .129 B-2/R2 is typical of those engaged against the Soviets in 1943, depicted here attacking a pair of T-34 tanks with its potent combination of Mk 101 30mm cannon and four MG17 machine guns. The Infantry Attack badge of the Schlacht units can be seen on the nose. |
A Zeppelin over London by Ivan Berryman. (PC) From 1915 to 1917, there existed a very real threat of a bombing campaign on mainland Britain as the giant German airships drifted silently and menacingly across the English Channel and the North Sea to deliver their deadly cargo on the towns and cities of the east coast. Countermeasures were soon put into action as powerful searchlights picked out the Zeppelins for the anti-aircraft batteries and RFC pilots to pour their unrelenting fire into the raiders, sometimes with little effect, sometimes with catastrophic results. Here, 2nd Lieutenant Brandons BE.2 climbs for position, its exhaust pipes aglow in the dark, whilst flak bursts all around the massive bulk of the L.33 as she passes over the east end of London on the night of 23 / 24th September 1916. |
Leutnant Josef Jacobs by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Germanys greatest exponent of the Fokker Dr1 Triplane, Leutnant Josef Jacobs is depicted chatting with colleagues of Jasta 7 before a sortie in the spring of 1918. His black Triplane became well known to allied pilots, not least because of his formidable kill rate. By the end of the war, still aged just 24, Jacobs had claimed 48 enemy aircraft destroyed. The unusual practice of applying the black cross to the upper sides of the lower wings was to counter friendly fire from other German aircraft who frequently mistook the Dr1 for a Sopwith Triplane. |
Leutnant Hans von Keudell by Ivan Berryman. (PC) An early star of Jasta 1, von Keudell is depicted here in his Halberstadt D.III, (instantly identifiable by his initial K on the fuselage side) as he drifts into position to exploit the blindspot of a Vickers Gunbus, late in the day in 1916. Von Keudells closing tally was 11 confirmed victories, but a possible 12. |
Tribute to Hans-Ulrich Rudel by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The most highly-decorated Luftwaffe pilot, Hans-Ulrich Rudel is the sole recipient of the Golden Oak Leaves supplementary award to the Knight's Cross, to add to the Swords and Diamonds. These awards reflect his quite incredible achievements with the Ju87 Stuka dive-bomber - he flew more than 2,000 missions, claiming more than 500 tanks amongst around 1,500 ground targets destroyed, plus a battleship, cruiser, destroyer and other shipping, as well as a number of trains. Additionally, he flew more than 400 missions in the Fw190 fighter, and is credited with 11 air victories. He lost a leg in combat near the end of the war and was later captured by the Allies, remaining in a POW camp until 1946. He is depicted here in his Ju87 lining up for an attack amongst the snowy landscape of the Eastern Front. Hans-Ulrich Rudel died in 1982. |
Tribute to Edgar 'Cobber' Kain by Ivan Berryman. (PC) No one will ever know how great a fighter pilot New Zealander Cobber Kain might have been, but in his short wartime service, he was credited with 14 confirmed victories and was the RAF's first flying ace. By mid 1940, he was suffering with fatigue and was sent on leave but, as a farewell gesture to his squadron comrades, he performed a short aerial display which resulted in a fatal crash. He is depicted in his 73 Sqn Hawker Hurricane Mk 1. |
The Horror and the Glory by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The flight to the Ruhr dams on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 as part of Operation Chastise was fraught with peril as each wave of three aircraft hugged the ground across Holland and into Germany to avoid detection. Having flown particularly low to avoid the flak and searchlights near Dulmen, ED864 (AJ-B) piloted by Flt Lt W Astell sadly hit high tension wires and immediately burst into flames, the aircraft rearing into the air before hitting the ground, it's Upkeep mine exploding moments later, killing all the crew instantly. These were the first victims of the Dambuster raids, the first of eight aircraft that failed to return of the nineteen that took off on this heroic mission. |
Lloyd C.V by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The Austro-Hungarian Lloyd C.V was a two-seat observation aircraft which was unconventional both in appearance and construction. Its unusually-shaped wings were not fabric covered, but were laminated in plywood for strength and lightness. This innovation, however, caused great problems with maintenance, battle damage repair and structural fatigue caused by moisture building up inside the wing section. Despite its faults, the C.V was a fast and streamlined machine that acquitted itself well during its brief career, 144 of the type being produced by the Lloyd and WKF factories in 1917. |

(PC) 6th June, 1944 - D-Day - and Martin B.26 Marauders of the 386th Bomb Group, 553rd Bomb Squadron are among the first aircraft to bomb the beaches in readiness for the Normandy landings on that momentous day. Shown softening up the enemy gun emplacements on a low level run over Utah Beach is 131576 AN-Z, now on display at the Utah Beach Museum. |
The Long Way Home by Ivan Berryman. (PC) On the night of 12/13th August 1942, Short Stirling RF325 was attacked by a Bf.110 night fighter over the Ardennes in Belgium whilst returning from a bombing raid. Damaged and low on fuel, Sqn Ldr G A Watt nursed his stricken aircraft across the English Channel before making a forced landing at Broadstairs in Kent. This was a scenario faced by hundreds of Bomber Command aircrew throughout World War II and this painting is intended as a tribute to them all, symbolising the loneliness and vulnerability of the heavy bomber as it went about its unenviable task on an almost nightly basis and in the face of impossible odds. |
HMS Formidable by Ivan Berryman. (PC) With HMS Warspite keeping a watchful eye off her port bow, the Illustrious class carrier HMS Formidable prepares to recover a Fairey Albacore TB MK1 of No. 826 sqn. following a vital sortie against Italian shipping at the start of the Battle of Cape Matapan in march 1941. Led by Lt Cdr W G H Saunt DSC, Formidables Albacores launched torpedo attacks on the battleship Vittorio Veneto, seriously damaging her, despite coming under intense anti aircraft fire and a splash barrage of 15-inch shells. |
Angels of Malta - Faith, Hope and Charity by Ivan Berryman. (PC) Although key to the allied campaign in the Mediterranean, Malta was virtually undefended against air raids in the early part of the Second World War. Just four Gloster Sea Gladiators, packed in crates, were deposited on the island by HMS Glorious, these aircraft originally intended for operations in Norway. Three of them were hurriedly assembled, the fourth being held in reserve, and were instantly engaged in fierce fighting against Italian raiders. Nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, their determined pilots fought for seventeen days without relief, their achievements playing a major part in fooling the Italian intelligence into thinking that this crucial Mediterranean outpost was much more heavily defended than it really was. |
